Volunteering in Syria with BET KANU
I volunteered with BET KANU at their center in Qamishli, Syria in 2019. BET KANU is a non-profit organization dedicated to preserving and advancing the Syriac language, which UNESCO has classified as a severely endangered language.
The organization works to revitalize Syriac through the creation of modern media such as animated songs, mobile apps, websites, cartoon series, and books for both children and adults. Alongside a team of local designers, animators, and developers, BET KANU also collaborates with volunteers from the diaspora to create resources the language currently lacks.
During my time there, I led free graphic design workshops for members of the media department. I supported the designers throughout their creative processes, helping improve workflow efficiency and maintain a high standard of visual quality across projects. I continued volunteering remotely after this.
Beyond media production, BET KANU plays a vital role in youth empowerment and job creation, offering hope and opportunity in a region affected by conflict. Being part of this environment was deeply meaningful and reinforced my belief in the power of design, language, and education as tools for resilience and cultural preservation.
Volunteering in Kenya with LocalAid
I volunteered in Kenya with LocalAid, a non-profit organization dedicated to supporting disadvantaged communities and vulnerable children in underdeveloped areas.
During my time with the organization, my work involved organizing and leading workshops for children, creating a safe and creative space where they could express themselves. Seeing how art helped build confidence and joy was one of the most rewarding parts of my experience. I supported several of their key initiatives, including school feeding programs that provide nutritious meals, scholarship programs that help children access education, and maternal and child health programs serving rural communities.
I also contributed to rebranding efforts, including redesigning the organization’s logo and website, and creating visual materials for International Street Children Day. These projects helped raise awareness of LocalAid’s mission and strengthened their public outreach.
This experience deepened my understanding of community-based impact and reinforced my commitment to using creativity and design for social good.
