Gabbaryate (dt. Heldinnen, Irak, 2026–2027)
In recent years, the indigenous Assyrian people have been trying to recover from the Islamic State invasion and subsequent liberation war. During this period, international organizations have primarily focused on rebuilding infrastructure and securing basic needs. The social and cultural aspects of life were neglected for a long time, but this is beginning to change.
In the villages of northern Iraq, Assyrian girls are discovering the sport of football and a community that gives them self-confidence, strength, and new perspectives.
This film follows players from various villages as they go about their daily lives and prepare for their matches. We get to know the players individually, learning about their dreams, doubts, family relationships, and how they cope with patriarchal society, some of whom experience support while others face obstacles. Gabbaryate combines intimate portraits, everyday scenes, and game situations to tell the story of passion, identity, and the courage to challenge social norms.
